Biking
San Luis Obispo is considered a biker’s paradise, which is why one of the best road-cycling teams in the world trains here. But you don’t need to be a pro to enjoy some time on two wheels. Rent a road bike at Art’s Cyclery or Cambria Bicycle Outfitter and head out on the smooth, low-traffic rural roads. Or hop on your fat tires for some technical singletrack and off-road fun. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed family outing or something a bit more challenging, there’s a ride to fit every need.
Beaches
Swimming, surfing, sandcastles, walking hand-in-hand – what’s better than a day at the shore? San Luis Obispo is central to several fabulous beaches. Don’t miss laid-back Cayucos, or for families and surfers, try Pismo Beach or The Strand in Morro Bay. For family fun, stroll along the tide pools at Shell Beach to spot starfish, crabs, sea slugs and more. And don’t miss secluded Avila Beach for a stunning sunset finale to your day.
Golf
Spend the day overlooking stunning ocean views or surrounded by lush vineyards while exploring SLO’s world-class golf options. Over a dozen uncrowded, pristine courses, including a Peter Jacobsen Signature Course, provide choices for novices and low-handicap players alike. The temperate weather makes for unprecedented golf conditions any time of day and in all seasons.
Hiking
Whether you’re into casual coastal strolls or grades that will make your quads burn, the local trails won’t disappoint. Many hikes are easily accessible by foot from downtown and give spectacular views of the city and surrounding farmland and vineyards. Explore waterfalls, caves, pygmy oaks, and sand dunes along the way. The moderate coastal climate and breathtaking surroundings make a hike a great way to start or end your day.
Kayaking
Get up close and personal with some of the area’s furred, flippered, and feathered residents. Paddle the local estuaries, bays, beaches, and lakes to meet otters, dolphins, harbor seals, and sea lions, as well as hundreds of species of birds. Head out with a tour group, hire an expert nature guide, or just explore on your own. Want a fitness challenge? Join in a local paddling event, or adrenalize your day by giving kayak surfing a try.
